Modern churches, or older churches that have been renovated or restored, tend not to have fixed church seating such as pews or benches. Instead these churches will have some form of individual stackable chair.
This type of stacking church chair is not necessarily designed specifically for churches, but rather for any scenario requiring a flexibile and moveable seating plan, for example a convention hall, restaurants, etc.
This type of seating is also commonly known as contract seating because the chairs are readily rented.
Stackable chairs have several elements in common. The frame is designed to allow the chairs to sit on top of each other and be pulled apart very quickly. The frame can be of wood or metal. Generally metal framed chairs are cheaper. The chairs can have a linking bracket or brackets at the rear of the seat back or on the legs. The link can This ensures that the chairs remain close together to prevent drift. The back and seat of the chair is most often made from either a plastic or wood, although certain textiles are also used.
